I have always enjoyed making things by hand since my early childhood. It started in my father’s workshop and continued until I went off to college. After I started my engineering career I took up photography, developing prints from color slides, and being an early adopter of digital photography and the editing that goes with it.

When I retired from the corporate world it became apparent that I should start looking for a winter hobby. While exploring the Internet I stumbled upon a couple of artists in England who were making different styles of hand-twisted wire tree sculptures. It was one of these artists, Clive Madison, who inspired me to attempt to create a tree sculpture for myself. It did not take me long to figure out the tools and methods needed as I developed my unique designs for various tree shapes. 

My work consists of hand-twisting copper or aluminum wire into tree sculptures of varying shapes. The finished tree is mounted on beautiful fossilized or mineral rock bases that are just as interesting as the sculpture. The copper wire used has an enameled coating that allows for many different colors and prevents the copper from changing color over time. Each design uses between 140 – 200 individual wires that are hand twisted to form the roots, trunk, and branches. The remaining 18” of wire is hand-twisted into loops to simulate the leaves (except for windswept trees). Each tree will have between 2,800 to 4,500 loops.
